Overview
How dermal fillers work
With age the face loses fat, collagen and bone support, which leads to hollows, folds and thinner lips. Dermal fillers are smooth gels placed beneath the skin to restore that lost volume and soften lines. Most are made of hyaluronic acid, a substance the body makes naturally, and they can be dissolved if needed.
Filler is a medical procedure, and safety depends on who is injecting. Blood vessels run throughout the face, so training in anatomy and in managing complications matters. Dr. Riemenschneider performs every filler treatment herself and favors a conservative approach: enough to refresh, not enough to change how you look.
When to consider treatment
Your cheeks look flatter, or you notice hollows under your eyes
The folds from your nose to your mouth have deepened
Your lips have thinned or lost definition
You want a refreshed look without surgery
Areas we treat
Cheeks and midface. Restores lift and support to the center of the face.
Smile lines and marionette lines. Softens the folds beside the nose and mouth.
Lips. Restores shape, definition and subtle fullness.
Chin and jawline. Balances the profile and sharpens the jawline.
Treatment
What treatment involves
Filler treatment is done in the office. Results are visible right away and settle over the following two weeks.
Consultation. Dr. Riemenschneider assesses your facial structure, listens to your goals and explains what filler can and cannot do.
Treatment. Numbing cream is applied first, and most fillers contain a numbing agent. The filler is placed with a fine needle or a blunt-tipped cannula.
Results. You see the change immediately, with the final result once any swelling settles.
How long it lasts. Usually several months to more than a year, depending on the product and the area treated.
Your visit
What to expect at your visit
We talk about your goals. What you would like to change and how subtle you want the result to be.
Dr. Riemenschneider plans and performs the treatment. She places the filler herself, checking symmetry as she goes.
Aftercare. Expect some swelling and possibly bruising for a few days. Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours.

The goal is for you to look rested, not different. Dr. Riemenschneider uses a conservative amount and can add more at a later visit if you want it.
-
Most hyaluronic acid fillers last from several months to more than a year. Areas that move a lot, such as the lips, tend to need a touch-up sooner.
-
Numbing cream and the numbing agent in the filler keep discomfort low. Most people describe pressure and a few brief pinches.
-
Swelling and bruising are common for a few days and occasionally up to a week or two. It is wise to schedule treatment at least two weeks before an important event.
-
Fillers have a strong safety record when placed by an experienced physician. Bruising and swelling are the most common side effects. Serious complications, such as filler blocking a blood vessel, are rare, which is why the injector's training matters.
-
Botox and Dysport relax the muscles that cause expression lines. Fillers replace lost volume and smooth folds that are present at rest. Many people benefit from both.
