Overview
About skin tags and benign growths
Skin tags are small, soft flaps of skin that hang from a thin stalk. They form where skin rubs against skin or clothing: the neck, underarms, eyelids, groin and under the breasts. They are harmless and very common, especially with age, weight gain and pregnancy.
Many other benign growths appear over the years. Seborrheic keratoses are waxy, stuck-on brown spots that often run in families, and cherry angiomas are small, bright red bumps. None of these need treatment for health reasons. Having a dermatologist look first matters, because some skin cancers can resemble a harmless growth.

Treatment
How benign growths are removed
Most benign growths are removed in minutes in the exam room. Dr. Riemenschneider picks the method that suits the type of growth and its location, and that will leave the least noticeable mark.
Snip removal. Skin tags are numbed and clipped off at the base.
Freezing. Liquid nitrogen for seborrheic keratoses and small skin tags.
Cautery. A fine electric tip that removes or flattens small growths.
Shave removal. A raised growth is shaved level with the skin and sent to a lab if there is any question about it.

Questions
Common questions about benign growth removal
Have a question that is not here? Call 214-833-5300.
-
Very little. Small tags are removed in a second, and larger ones are numbed first.
-
A skin tag that has been removed does not return. New ones can form over time in the same areas, especially where skin rubs.
-
It is not recommended. Cutting or tying off a tag at home can cause bleeding and infection, and a growth that looks like a skin tag is sometimes something else.
-
No. They are harmless, non-cancerous growths. Because they can be dark and irregular, they are worth having checked once so you know what they are.
-
You cannot always tell by looking. Dr. Riemenschneider examines each growth, and anything uncertain is sent to a lab.
